A Warm Welcome
I've been mulling over and meaning to start a blog since the summer, and here it is nearing the end of October and I'm finally making a start. Better late than never and all of that sort of thing! I love October. The way the sun is lower in the sky and gives a golden glow to everything outside; pumpkins everywhere; pulling out all of the blankets I've made over the last couple of years; putting the fireplace on...I could go on, but I won't. It suffices to say that October is one of my favourite months of the year.
Back to the blog, why start one? Good question. I'm not sure blogs are nearly as popular as they once were years ago. Certainly vlogs and other forms of social media have grown enormously in popularity. And I gave starting a YouTube channel go
last fall and really enjoyed it. However, I'm not the most tech minded
creature out there and even with the very patient help of tech support
(my fifteen year old son), I'm not very fast getting them made. It's
not something I want to shelve entirely, but life being what it is
(busy, busy, busy), it felt like a good idea to try something I can
manage on my own. It's my way of being able to share my happy, creative life with you.
All set up to record last fall
So back to that warm welcome...I would really like to welcome you to this happy, creative little space! My biggest reason for originally starting my YouTube channel was to extend the feeling of community I enjoy with all kinds of different creative makers on Instagram. I love seeing what other crafters, makers, and gardeners are creating and doing. I love being able to respond to their creations. I love making connections with ones whose work really resonates with me. And I love to share my own creative adventures! I sew, embroider, and crochet and my life would be incomplete without making pretty things. So if you find joy in making and creating things - or just enjoy a nice crafty read with a good cup of tea, welcome! I'll eventually blow the dust off of my YouTube channel, but until then, I'm quite happy to share my happy creative life with you here!
I really enjoyed embroidering the centre piece!
And I had to pull out this lovely Christmas kit from nickifranklin.com - which I did start last year, and I'm fine with not having finished it. It's not called slow stitching for nothing!
A sewing project of my own - Christmas countdown calendars. They still need their numbers, and I plan to make a few more. So nice when my own designs work out - they don't always!
One of my favourite parts about being able to sew is to be able to change the decor in our house. I'd made Easter and summer themed pillow covers already this year, so I simply had to make a pair of autumn themed ones. Isn't this Belle and Boo fabric lovely? Belle and Boo is British line of fabrics that I get from willowcottagequiltco.com - an absolutely gorgeous shop that carries some beautiful European lines of fabric that are hard to find here in Canada.
Apart from making things whenever I get a spare moment, I really enjoy gardening. We have a greenhouse in our back garden; it brings us so much joy - at this time of year, it's full of plants that don't like to be wet and cold (my collection of Lewisias, our pelargoniums that I hope to overwinter, our lemon tree, and our thyme and rosmary plants), and the fairy lights inside are coming on earlier and earlier as the sun sets in the evening.
The fairy lights in the greenhouse were a brilliant purchase at the end of the Christmas season last year...two strings of LED lights for 60% off!

I'm Liona, stay at home mum, maker of pretty things and easy going gardener. I also manage our youngest's type one diabetes and celiac disease - being someone else's pancreas is full time work! My husband (an electrical engineer by day and a woodworker whenever he has spare time) and I have been married for twenty years, and we have four children. Son number one (tech support with an encyclopedic knowledge of tech and retro video games) is 15; son number two (coded his first video game by the time he was 13) is 13; our only daughter (our voracious reader - you will not find her without a book, especially of the Harry Potter variety) will be 11 soon, and son number 3 (mischief maker, great giggler, and giver of great hugs) is 7.

I think that's plenty for a first post. I do hope you enjoy being here, and do let me know in the comments what you're up to. I'm a natural introvert, but I genuinely love the crafty, creative connections I've made online over the years.

Until my next post, you'll probably find my wrapped in a handmade blanket enjoying my favourite season!
